about craft
Inlay work continues to be the pride of these stone carvers. This is usually done on white marble. Locally known as Pacchikari, this craft was introduced by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan, who brought specialists from Persia to train local artisans. The pietra dura (pictorial mosaic work) of the Taj Mahal continues to bear the stamp of this craft.
