Dhokra Weaving

chhaya mondal
Dinajpur, West Bengal
Like most women in her community, Chaya learned the craft from the women in her family. Traditionally engaged in Dhokhra weaving, a jute-based mat weaving practice, she and her group have expanded their skills incorporating cotton into their designs. A unique aspect of her craft is the use of a traditional loin loom for weaving, combined with hand-spun jute.

about craft
Jute-based mat weaving from northern West Bengal, especially Dinajpur, is a traditional craft using locally grown jute. Practised on loin looms, it allows precise control over weave and pattern, creating strong, breathable mats suited to the climate. Rooted in domestic use, the craft continues to evolve while retaining its core techniques and material identity.
