about craft
Tholu Bommalata is the traditional art of shadow puppetry from Andhra Pradesh, India. This ancient craft involves creating intricate leather puppets, usually made from goat or deer hide, which are then painted with vibrant natural dyes. The puppets depict characters from Hindu epics like the Ramayana and Mahabharata. Skilled puppeteers manipulate these figures behind a white cloth screen illuminated by oil lamps, bringing stories to life through shadows. Accompanied by music and narration, Tholu Bommalata performances are a captivating blend of artistry, folklore, and cultural heritage, preserving an important aspect of Andhra Pradesh’s rich traditional arts.
