about craft
The tradition of manufacturing bell metal products holds a significant historical legacy in India, dating back almost 5000 years to the era of the Indus Valley Civilization. Bell metal, an alloy of copper and zinc, has been utilized to create a diverse array of articles, including sculptures, pots, pans, utensils, and, most notably, bells. This alloy, revered for its pleasant sound and resonant qualities, has been integral to ancient cultures and civilizations as both a mode of communication and a musical instrument. The craft of bell metal artistry thrives in regions like Kutch, Gujarat, where artisans employ traditional techniques involving heating and beating metal sheets to create exquisite bells. These bells, believed to dispel negative energy according to Hindu and Buddhist traditions, serve not only religious but also cultural and aesthetic purposes, embodying the rich heritage and craftsmanship of the region.
