Majid Khatri, born in the Khatri Community of Dhamadka, Gujarat, a village renowned for its traditional Ajrakh hand block print craft, had a family history deeply rooted in this art. However, due to financial instability, his father had to abandon the craft and work as a tailor. After high school, Majid sought work to support his family and decided to learn the ancestral craft from his uncles. Despite limited resources, he slowly established his practice by initially doing job work for more established artisans. The COVID-19 pandemic presented new opportunities, and Majid embraced digital platforms, creating his own designs and marketing them through marketplaces like Amazon under the Amazon Karigar Programme, social media, and exhibitions. Over time, he experimented with new materials and techniques, receiving positive feedback. With over 30 years of experience, Majid has also contributed to his community by providing technical training to 30 local artisans on Ajrakh hand block printing under the Handicrafts Mega Cluster Mission (HMCM) set up by the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India.

about craft

Ajrakh is a traditional hand block printing technique originating from the Kutch region of Gujarat, India. This ancient craft, practiced for centuries, is renowned for its intricate geometric patterns and vibrant natural dyes. The process involves multiple stages, including washing, dyeing, printing, and drying, often repeated several times to achieve the desired depth of color and complexity of design. Ajrakh is distinguished by its use of natural materials such as indigo, madder, and other plant-based dyes, which lend a rich and enduring color palette. The designs typically feature symmetrical patterns and motifs inspired by nature, Islamic architecture, and local traditions. The craft requires immense skill and patience, as artisans meticulously align the wooden blocks to create detailed patterns.
