Balasore, Odisha
Mamuni Kar began her coir craft practice in 2023, starting with Jagannath figurines and building a village-based enterprise. Driven by a strong desire to share her skills and create opportunities within her community, Mamuni established Jagannath Coir Craft in her village, where she initially trained around 30 members free of cost. An enthusiastic and self-driven artisan, Mamuni actively learns new designs through online platforms such as YouTube and enjoys experimenting with new product ideas.

about craft
Coir craft is a traditional fibre-based practice using coconut husk to create durable, biodegradable objects through twisting, binding, knotting, and shaping. While historically focused on utilitarian items like ropes and mats, the craft has evolved to include decorative forms-figurines, animals, and floral designs-showcasing adaptability while retaining the material’s natural strength, texture, and ecological value.
