about craft
Baleswari Jaukandhei, the traditional lac dolls of Balasore, Odisha, are a 17th-century folk craft made from fired clay and finished with natural lac resin. Artisans decorate the figures using molten, colored lac and fine guna thread work to create detailed features and attire. Traditionally made in pairs and gifted during weddings and rituals, the craft reflects cultural symbolism, eco-friendly practices, and Odisha’s rich artistic heritage.
