Arit, West Bengal
Sandhya Metal Craft is the brainchild of Rajib Kumar Maiti, a 48-year-old Dhokra artisan from the village of Arit, Paschim Medinipur, West Bengal. Originally, Rajib’s family was engaged in making utensils through metal casting. However, after completing his graduation, Rajib decided to explore his interests further. Inspired by the prevalent Dhokra art in his surroundings, he embarked on a journey to master this traditional craft.

about craft
The term “Dhokra” is believed to derive from the word “dhokna,” meaning to cast, reflecting the craft of bell metal casting. Known for its traditional lost wax technique, Dhokra art has a history spanning thousands of years, with artifacts similar to the present craft form found at the sites of Mohenjedaro and Harappa. The handcraft includes traditional ornaments, animal and tribal figures, and idols of local deities, which are popular in the region.
