MAYU: Dance of Sabai and Khajuri

Ranjita makes baskets with Sabai grass (Eulaliopsis Binata) which is a locally grown grass found in Odisha and Khejuri Patra otherwise known as the leaves of Silver Date Palm tree (Phoenix Sylvestris) using basic coiling techniques. The designer’s primary aim was to upskill her and her team to explore the many possibilities in making such baskets keeping in mind all the natural constraints of the raw materials and coiling as a basket making technique. These baskets take us through the above journey where the patterns are inspired from the Saura tribal art of Odisha.
