about workshop

Manikchand Mahto, a third-generation artisan from Jharkhand, preserves the tradition of Sohrai paintings, a folk art of his community. Originating from mud wall murals by tribal women, Sohrai art features motifs inspired by nature, animals, and rituals. Guided by his mother, a master artisan, Manikchand honed his skills through observation and self-teaching. Expanding beyond traditional walls, he incorporates Sohrai motifs into wood, paper, and canvas, creating coasters, wall plates, and paintings. His work blends tradition with modernity, sharing the timeless charm of Sohrai art with new audiences.
